Ice Storm!

This blog entry is about a month behind, but I want to get these pictures up anyway. Early February heralded a terrific winter storm that dumped at least 20 inches of snow in some places, mostly north of us. What Dayton got was an ice storm. Conditions were bad enough that the air force base here was closed down for two days. That meant school was cancelled too.

We did lose power for a few hours the night the storm hit. Ryan and I went outside for a little while after the boys went to bed and we could hear the tree limbs in the neighborhood creaking under the weight of the ice that accumulated on them. It was kind of an eerie sound! Occasionally we could hear a big limb snap in the distance and come crashing to the ground. In the end we only lost a few small limbs but many trees were split right down the middle throughout our neighborhood.

Well, we can only handle so much of being cooped up together inside, so the second day of the storm we ventured outside to get some fresh air and exercise. Our yard had a few inches of snow before the storm hit; the snow was covered in glare ice!

Andrew (orange jacket) is not picking something up here; he is on the ground because he slipped and fell!

These pictures show how every single blade of exposed grass; every tree limb; every piece of foliage was encapsulated by ice! So you can imagine how slippery the roads were.

Poor Caleb! We shuffled across the street to do a little sledding on the ice. Somehow on the first run Caleb's sled turned over and he did a face plant in the ice and snow! Luckily his only injury was a busted lip. He gets credit for being a good sport though. He cried for a minute so I picked him up, then he was actually willing to get back in his sled and do a few more runs. The rest of the sledding adventure was a success with no more casualties.
Winner of the Good Sport Award!
After an hour or so we decided to head inside. By that time the freezing rain was coming down again pretty good, but it was a nice break to bundle up and get OUT OF THE HOUSE!!!!
